| Human immune system has not adapted to changes in the environment | | Posted Friday, January 26, 2007 3:18:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | It seems that the current "allergy epidemic" is due not so much to an increase in allergenic risk factors as to the disappearance of factors protecting people against allergies. The human immune system has not had the time to adapt to the rapid changes in the urban environment and way of life. These are the conclusions of Professor Tari Haahtela and his research team, who have been studying allergies in Finnish and Russian Karelia. Their project is part of the Academy's Microbes and Man Research Programme, the evaluation of which has just been completed. The research was concerned with the prevalence of allergic diseases in Finnish and Russian Karelia as well as risk factors in schoolchildren and their mothers. The prevalence of atopic allergy was determined by skin prick tests and by measuring serum antibodies.... | |

| | | Dental Allergies | | Posted Wednesday, January 17, 2007 1:24:59 PM by Blog57 Team | | But those same allergies could be causing a much more severe reaction inside their mouth. And it causes problems that often go undiagnosed. A few years ago Cate Bennett couldn't relax when eating out. Severe dental problems led to an infection, crowns on her four front teeth, and one mortifying moment at lunch with a friend. "The first bite I took of the salad, I watched my crown fall out in the salad bowl," Bennett said. "I was so embarrassed." Turns out, Bennett's allergy to metals in jewelry also made her allergic to the metal crowns in her mouth. "I had inflamed gums," she said "I had a great deal of sensitivity and When Dr. Joseph Kravitz saw Bennett's grey and purple gums and the holes where her gum tissue was pulling away from her teeth, he immediately recognized the problem.... | |

| | | Sick as a dog | | Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 11:22:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | As a new dog owner, I once took my first dog Piper to the vet when I noticed she had black spots on her tongue. It turned out they were part of her coloration. I was stunned and a little relieved when my vet parted her fur to show me she had black spots on her skin as well. When Tater, our 8-year-old Cairn terrier urinated in the snow and I saw blood, I took her to the vet and found she had a kidney stone that required surgery. My mind wandered to that place called hindsight. Several months earlier as we prepared to take a vacation, Tater approached me, looked into my eyes, let out a high-pitched yipe and ran outside through the doggie door. If I had taken her to the vet then, I might have learned earlier that something was wrong. How do we know what symptoms merit a visit to the vet?Dr.... | |

| | | MRSA toxin acquitted: Study clears suspected key to severe ... | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 1:32:53 PM by Blog57 Team | | Researchers who thought they had identified the bacterial perpetrator of the often severe disease caused by community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) had better keep looking: Scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, have exonerated a toxin widely thought to be the guilty party. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is one of many toxins associated with S. aureus infection. Because it can be found in virtually all CA-MRSA strains that cause soft-tissue infections, several research groups previously have proposed that PVL is the key virulence factor. But new evidence strongly suggests that is not the case. A study led by NIAID researchers at Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, MT, shows that the two major epidemic CA-MRSA strains and the same strains with PVL removed are equally effective at destroying human white blood cells--our primary defense against bacterial infections--and spreading disease.... | |

| | | Hladysz: Brain s balance an ADD factor | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 3:16:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | During our consultation in May, Alice described her 13-year-old son, Matthew, as a typical couch potato, diagnosed one-and-a-half years ago with attention deficit disorder. Matthew also suffered from asthma, eczema and numerous food, chemical and airborne allergies. His most pronounced ADD symptoms were lack of concentration, forgetfulness and disorganization. He was lethargic, staying inactive most of the time and not even willing to pursue friendships."He would rather stay on the couch," Alice said.ADD is viewed as a mental disorder, but it actually stems from brain starvation, brain poisoning, overall brain stress and genetics. (Refer to my September article for a description of all six ADD types. In its broad definition, ADD encompasses hyperactivity as well as other similar imbalances.)Psychiatrist Charles Gant, in his book "ADD and ADHD Complementary Medicine Solutions," writes, "Absolutely 100 percent of human beings, without exception, can be made to display the symptoms of inattentiveness by simply driving their brains into chemical imbalance, either with enough of a toxin exposure (brain poisoning) and/or with enough of a nutritional deficiency (brain starvation)."Gant continues his reasoning by encouraging readers to remember the way they felt when they had a bad case of flu.... | |

In other words, they may have found a major player in the machinery that allows people to release body heat and stay cool. .... | |

| | | Water can prevent headaches | | Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 3:10:57 AM by Blog57 Team | | You may have noticed that you experience more headaches during the winter months or if you drink less than the recommended amount of water daily. Ensuring adequate hydration and air humidity may help prevent chronic headaches. The body is made up of about 50-60 percent water. Water is needed by the body because it regulates the processes of living cells, including those in the brain. When cells do not have an adequate supply of water, they can not function properly. Headaches are one of the early symptoms of dehydration. Six to ten glasses of water daily are necessary to adequately hydrate your body, more if you are over the age of 65. If your water intake is less than the recommended amount and you experience chronic headaches, you may be dehydrated.... | |

| | | Microchips becoming the latest medical accessory | | Posted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 7:14:50 PM by Blog57 Team | | It's a technology that's already being used on millions of pets in America. Now, microchips are being implanted in human beings as well and this week in Las Vegas, the procedure is being performed on dozens of people attending a medical convention. The implants are inserted into the arm. The tiny computer chips can help doctors get important medical information. The chips are incredibly small and are implanted just under the skin. The chips that are used in dogs and cats contain information that can identify the animal if it gets lost. In the case of humans, the chips provide a link to a computer database that gives doctors instant access to a patient's complete medical history. All this week at the Las Vegas Convention Center, health care professionals are having the chips surgically implanted.... | |
