The question: Might so-called anti-aging supplements, marketed as a way to replenish hormones that decline with age, help people retain their physical health? This study randomly assigned 144 people (87 men and 57 women) older than 60 to take one of those supplements - with the steroid hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) - or a placebo daily; men also were randomly assigned to wear a skin patch of testosterone or a placebo. After two years, blood levels of DHEA had increased; for men, testosterone levels also had risen. Bone density had improved slightly at one of the five body sites where it was measured. However, a battery of tests showed no improvement in muscle strength, physical performance or the body's ability to lower glucose levels, and the participants reported no effect on their quality of life....

Accelerated Aging Among People With Rheumatoid Arthritis

The observation that people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) die at a younger age than people without this disease is not new, but arthritis experts don't fully understand the causes of the increased mortality rates. Laboratory scientists have observed that RA and other diseases can cause multiple systems within the body to age more rapidly than expected. Cells affected by diseases begin to show signs of what's called accelerated aging -- damage at the molecular level resulting in poorer function. Mayo researchers attending the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting will share preliminary findings that suggest increased mortality among people with RA is consistent with the concept of accelerated aging. ....

Teen's devotion touching, real

Because Young Adult fiction can sometimes appeal to teen and adult readers, we offer a review that discusses the novel for both audiences. My grandmother and my sister Janice were really close. All our lives, from the time we were kids -- Janice is seven years younger than me -- until we were adults, my mother's mother had this attachment to my sister. Over time, my sister reciprocated. How could she not? How do you turn your back on someone who has made you the star of their world, for better or worse? When my grandmother became housebound, first by choice, then by illness, my sister was the one who planned her entire life around our grandmother's needs. She lived with my grandmother, and when that didn't work, she moved out but lived for her....

NEW YORK, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- If you thought it was hard to get information about Amatokin(TM), the "underground" youth cream that has the cosmetic world buzzing, it's going to be even harder as the political debate about the use of stem cells has heated up in the United States. In part because of the political argument and the Michael J. Fox/Rush Limbaugh media circus surrounding the topic of stem cell research, Amatokin's exclusive worldwide distributor, Voss Laboratories(TM), once again issued its patented "No Comment" in response to new questions about the highly-anticipated launch of the "mystery" skin cream. However, in a rare off-the-cuff statement, Voss spokesperson Heather Hurst, said: "It was bad enough when the controversy surrounding Amatokin came from a few medical elitists who believe that employing stem cell technology to 'merely' make people look younger trivialized the importance of their 'legitimate' research....

Anti-aging supplements don't work: study
Posted Friday, October 20, 2006 7:06:53 AM by Blog57 Team
Widely used DHEA supplements and testosterone patches failed to deliver their touted anti-aging benefits in one of the first rigorous studies to test such claims in older men and women. The substances did not improve the participants' strength, their physical performance, or certain other measures of health. "I don't think there's any case for administering these" to elderly people, said Dr. K. Sreekumaran Nair of the Mayo Clinic, lead author of the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. DHEA, a steroid that is a precursor to the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen, is made by the body, but levels decline rapidly after age 25. DHEA supplements are marketed as rejuvenating agents, and U.S. sales hit $50 million last year....
