AUBURN HILLS, Mich. The owners of the Palace of Auburn Hills have spent 25 (m) million dollars in upgrades to keep the venue up-to-date. The home of the Detroit Pistons opened in 1988. Nearly every other N-B-A team has built a new arena or fully remodeled since then. The Palace now features a new north entrance and a specialty food court, high-definition television and other improvements. Palace C-E-O Tom Wilson says the effort is aimed at keeping it in the same league as the nation's top venues. A marketing expert says The Palace could be preparing for new local competition for national acts. Ilitch Holdings is considering building a new downtown arena for its Detroit Red Wings. Romo expects 'new wrinkles' as Cowboys QB faces Redskins

LANDOVER, Md. In his second N-F-L start, Tony Romo faces a Gregg Williams defense. Usually, that's cause to shield your eyes and hide the children. But ugly days have been few and far between for the quarterbacks who have faced the Washington Redskins this year. Besides, Romo won't be a nervous newcomer when he comes to town with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. He's the league's latest instant celebrity with a gaudy one-and-oh record 14 wins shy of Ben Roethlisberger's 15-and-oh regular-season debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lest the hype get out of hand, Drew Bledsoe's replacement has a way to go before he's crowned a successor to Don Meredith, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman in the parade of great Cowboys quarterbacks. Romo threw an interception that helped dig a 14-to-0 hole last week against Carolina before the Cowboys rallied for a 35-to-14 victory....

Losing Species: Is This The Last Century For Wild Seafood?

Its findings are startling. A global study lead by Dalhousie's Boris Worm shows current trends projecting the collapse of all currently fished seafoods before 2050. The international group of ecologists and economists show that the loss of biodiversity is profoundly reducing the ocean's ability to produce seafood, resist diseases, filter pollutants, and rebound from stresses such as over-fishing and climate change. ....

Women's skin tone can gives clues to health, age
Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 3:16:06 AM by Blog57 Team
London, Oct 30 (IANS) Wrinkles aren't the only cue the human eye looks for to evaluate age. A blotchy facial skin tone can add 10-12 years to a woman's perceived age, says a study. The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, used three-dimensional imaging and morphing software to remove wrinkles and furrows from pictures of women, leaving skin tone as the only variable. Researchers were then able to determine exactly what impact facial skin tone has on how young, healthy and attractive people perceive the women to be. Faces with more even skin tone were judged to be younger, writes Medical News Today portal. 'Until now, behavioural scientists have mostly ignored the overall homogeneity and colour saturation of a person's skin,' says lead researcher Karl Grammer....

Blue Lagoon prevents wrinkles

Scientific evidence shows that elements in the bathing water in the Blue Lagoon Spa in southwest Iceland slow the advance of wrinkles. The findings of the scientific research, undertaken by the Spa in cooperation with German skin expert Dr. Jean Krutman, were presented at a conference in the Blue Lagoon yesterday. Morgunbladid reports. Dr. Krutman has undertaken several studies on how the environment affects health and is especially known for his research on the effects of aging from sunlight. The skin expert's research on the qualities of the water in the Blue Lagoon showed that silicon and two kinds of turquoise-colored algae in the water, which give the Spa its distinctive blue look, slow the aging of skin and strengthen its outermost layer....

Something to look for in Series

Now that Jose Valentin's mustache didn't make the World Series, where do we turn for sideshow entertainment? Sure, you can trace Jim Leyland's wrinkles and discover they're actually a map to Cooperstown. You can count Tim McCarver's references to Bob Gibson and Mickey Lolich. Or, like the rest of us, try to get a handle on this Preston Wilson/Mookie Wilson deal. Basically, here's how it'll go down . . . 1. Joe Buck reminds you that mediocre St. Louis outfielder Preston Wilson is the stepson of former Met outfielder Mookie Wilson. 2. You smile slightly because, though you never liked those 1980s Mets, you always kinda liked Mookie. But only because you have to like a grown man named Mookie -- someday Pokey Reese will be remembered the same way. 3. You think to yourself, "Hmmm, they have the same last name, though, so Mookie must've legally adopted young Preston." 4....

Fisher: Sweetening pension pot is troubling

I was prepared for the wrinkles and the forgetfulness. But I never thought that on my 55th birthday I would turn into a curmudgeon. Yet there I was last week, grousing about the contract Palo Alto had just signed with its union employees. I realized that if I'd worked for the city for 29 years instead of a newspaper company, I could retire now at nearly my full salary -- at taxpayer expense. ``When is some city in California going to stand up to the unions and stop approving these cushy pension deals?'' I asked no one in particular. I'm happy to pay public employees well. I want smart, competent people running my city and teaching my kids. And I belong to a union; I've been paying into a pension plan for decades. But I don't expect to be able to live on my pension check....
